THE PROCEDURE:
This experiment demonstrates the conservation of  angular momentum.  The first part of the demonstration is to stand on the turntable with a dumbbell in each hand.  Have someone rotate the platform slowly.  Draw the dumbbells close to your side and notice that you speed up.  Extend your arms slowly and you slow down.

The second part of the demonstration is to take the bicycle wheel in your hands, noticing that the rim of the wheel has been weighted in order to increase its moment of inertia.  Give the wheel a moderate spin.  Now step on the platform holding the wheel so that its axis is horizontal.  Make sure that you and the platform are initially at rest.  Turn the spinning wheel so that its axis is vertical, parallel to the axis of the platform, notice that you start revolving in a direction opposite to that of the wheel.  Reverse the axis of the wheel and notice that your motion is reversed.
