THE PROCEDURE: This apparatus can be used to demonstrate the various types of friction; static, kinetic, rolling, etc. To determine the coefficient of static friction, set the block on the plane. Loop the string over the pulley and find the minimum angle at which the block starts to slide. Then use; [ mgsin(q) = mN + Mg ] and solve for 'm' when q is at the maximum angle with out slipping. To determine the coefficient of kinetic friction, set the plane horizontally (flat). Attach a cord to the block so that it runs over the pulley and hangs down unobstructed off the edge. Attach a weight pan to the cord. Gradually put weights on the pan until the block continues to move when pushed lightly with a finger. |
