Hi Steve,

Thank you for contacting the Hupmobile Club, it is always nice to hear from another Hupmobile owner. The car serial number provided ( A117684) indicates the Hupmobile is a 1929 Model A7 ( the number 7 indicates there were seven major changes made to the Model A which makes the use of some repair parts not interchangeable with earlier models). The A7 serial numbers are from A115000 through A150000.

A few of the differences between the 1928 and the 1929 Model A Hupmobiles are; The instrument panels are quite different, the '28 has an almost square panel with the upper corners rounded, four knobs or key slot are located at the bottom two corners, three gauges are located in the upper half of the center portion of the panel. The 1929 instrument panel is rectangular in appearance with a rounded top and bottom above and below the center gauges, there are two smaller gauges on either side of the center gauge. The instrument panel is quite ornate when compared to the '28 model. The tail light on the '29 model has a small raised point at the top of the metal that surrounds the glass. The 1928 model tail light is round. If I can locate
some pictures of the instrument panels I will email them to you. Hope this helps in your quest to determine the year of your Hupmobile

Thanks a lot. This does help. I will have current photos of the car posted by the end of the week if not today. Depends on what extra time I have today.

What's the rule of thumb on colors and upholstery?
I'm kind of a pearliest when it comes to cars. However, the interior is shot in my car and it the samples of mohair that I can find are extremely $$ and boring in color. I found some nice classic upholstery that look like it came for the 20's. My exterior paint scheme is to keep the black where it is but change the light green to dark navy blue and change the dark green to champaign. The interior will be a 3 color scheme as well. Brown seats to mimic short mohair but the side wall will be a pattern of brown diamonds boarded with dark navy blue. The headliner is a floral pattern in champaign. Not authentic by very sharply dressed. I hope to have photos of the upholstery up on my site soon. Do you think this color scheme is a good one?

Parts: I have 3 broken window cranks. I'm missing the interior, passenger side pillar lamp. and the livers on the steering wheel are broken. What size of battering is best Votes/Amps. I think that this car needs a 9V or is it a 6V, the batter locations is under the driver's seat. I still don't know Amps.

I'm so use to 1966 Mopar, I don't even know the best type of oils for this type of car.

Any help would be great. See, this is my winter project and I would love to have her up and running my summer. The last time this car was on the road was in the early '80s.

-Thanks again
-Steve.

Hi Steve,

I finally got a chance to view the pictures on your web site and two of the pictures show the dashboard. These pictures indicate the Hupmobile is a 1929 Model A. The construction date of the Hupmobile may have been in 1928. The construction of the 1929 model began in August 1928 with serial number 115000. Your number (A117684) could have been completed before the New Year. We do not have any production figures to use but 1928 was the best year Hupp Motor Car Co, they made almost 66,000 cars that year, 1929 they made over 50,000 cars ( not all of them were Model A). Your Hupmobile uses a six volt battery that will fit in the battery compartment.

You might consider joining the Hupmobile Club, where you would have access to the 1928-1929 Model A Technical Advisor. He is the Hupmobile Club expert on that model and can provide answers to your questions and give guidance on your restoration problems. The Hupmobile Club has a bi-monthly publication where members can place ads for parts they need, manuals needed, location of parts, etc.
